NEW! Website updated March 2024; added new photo gallery of visit to Driftwood Cabin in 2004 (now demolished). Check it out!

Beach environments have an undeniable magnetism, but the beaches of the coastal islands of the Southeastern United States have a particularly unique and photogenic appeal. Tidal incursions into primordial maritime forests have led to beaches littered with dramatic stands of tree skeletons. Whether dominated by still-erect trees planted in the sand, or fallen trees littering the coast in a chaotic matrix, these beaches constitute some of the most spectacular places in North America. NOTE: the images here were made prior to several damaging weather events in 2016, including Hurricane Matthew, which caused some of these sites to close for many months. We hope to revisit these areas soon to document how they have changed. Stay tuned!
